DIY Succulent Table

A couple of months ago, I came across this video on Facebook.

Three things instantly grabbed my attention in this video. One, I have that exact table but in black. Two, I LOVE succulents. Three, that actually doesn’t look too difficult!

So, finally, a couple of weekends ago, I decided to finally try my first DIY Home Project from Facebook. I consider myself to be decently crafty, but I’ve never tried to turn one thing into something super different! But I figured since my IKEA table only cost me $5 at a thrift store, I wouldn’t be losing much if I failed!

My first step in building this table was making sure I had everything I needed:

  • IKEA table

  • Succulents

  • Pebbles

  • Soil

  • Plastic Bags

  • Box Cutter

  • Ruler (or something straight to help you draw stenciled lines)

  • Strong couple of pairs of hands

I pretty much had everything I needed at home except for the succulents and pebbles, so I walked to my local nursery and Trader Joe’s and picked up some cute little plants! But, please, somebody tell me why succulents are SO expensive? I wanted this to be a cheap, inexpensive project, but my succulents ended up costing close to $60 and I didn’t even fill in the entire table!

But, moving on. I got all of my (not so cheap) supplies and got to stenciling. I drew in a decent sized rectangle and began to slice along the lines with the box cutter, praying the interior of MY IKEA table was the same as the one from the video!

Thank goodness, it was!

I do have one grievance about this part of the process though. The video made it seem like cutting through that top layer of the table and pulling it out was super easy, but it really took a lot of (wo)man power! I legit broke a sweat slicing line after line after line until I broke through the tabletop. And then I had Arjuna rip it out because I was whipped.

After we finally got the tabletop off, we ripped out the cardboard and started putting in all of the different layers. We cut up plastic grocery bags to use as our bottom layer, threw in the full can of pebbles, and then added the soil.

Once all of that was in, we started placing the succulents where we wanted. The video left space between the succulents, but I like mine more compact, so I put them close together. I quickly realized I didn’t have enough to fill the entire hole, so we did the best we could and vowed to buy more succulents whenever we come across some that we really like.

Overall, I think the DIY Succulent Table actually turned out pretty well! It ties into the vibe of my living room and it is super cute! I would definitely recommend you try this if you’ve got all of the necessary items! I also think I am more willing to try Facebook DIY videos after completing this project.

If you try it out for yourself, let me know how it goes and share your photos on Instagram tagging #BorderlineMillennials.
